Metturdam

The Mettur Dam is one of the largest dams in India built in 1934. It was constructed in a gorge, where the Kaveri River enters the plains. ... Upstream from the dam is Hogenakal Falls. The maximum level of the dam is 120 ft (37 m) and the maximum capacity is 93.47 tmc ft. The Mettur Dam is frequently in news during the recent past because of the Cauvery water dispute between the States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Consequent to building dams, including the Kabini Dam, across the Kaveri River in Karnataka, the Mettur Dam does not receive adequate water during lean seasons. Thus, the Dam nearly goes dry during certain parts of the year, when water is most needed by the farmers and general public of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This has created serious dispute and tension between the neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.       Book Now

Many years ago, boys grazing the sheep were playing at the foot hill. A new boy also appeared there and joined them. The new boy began to climb the hill fast and stopped at a place with all brightness around him and disappeared. The boys informed the incident to he villagers. The villagers came to the place, found three Swayambu idols and signs of pujas performed there. They understood the boy was but Muruga and built the temple. A five tier Raja gopuram stands majestically in the temple. In the early days, the temple had only two shrines for the swayambumurthi and Dandayuthapani nearby. It is said that Lord Muruga appeared in the dream of a devotee and expressed His wish to have His presence as a child. Accordingly, He was then installed as Lord Balasubramania behind the Sayambumurthi idols. Lord Vinayaka graces the temple as Adivara Vinayaka.      Book Now
