Gandhi-Hill

The Gandhi Hill is one of the popular attractions in Vijayawada and is also known as the Gandhi Stupa features a mammoth Gandhi statue 16 mts tall that was unveiled by the then President of India Dr. Zakir Hussain on 6th October 1968. The hill also features seven stupas that are almost 150 mts tall. Situated at an elevation of 500 ft above the main town of Vijayawada, the Gandhi Hill Memorial features several stone slabs that have been inscribed with the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. This apart, there is a well-stocked library that houses a large collection of books, a planetarium as well as the Light and Sound show that portrays the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. The Gandhi hill offers a spectacular view of the city of Vijayawada, and you may also enjoy a toy train ride as well. Best time to visit: The best time to visit Vijayawada is between the months of November and March. Trivia: Gandhi Hill holds the distinction of being the first Gandhi Memorial in India to be built on a hillock! Mogalarajapuram caves

The Mogalarajapuram caves are located in the heart of the Vijayawada City in Kasturibaipet or Mogalarajapuram in Andhra Pradesh. These are the most ancient examples of rock cut temple architecture that is supposed to date back to the 5th century. It is a group of 5 stone cut shrines out of which only one is in a good condition. It is famous for the Ardhanareeshwara statue or the half man half woman avatar of Lord Shiva. It is said to be the one and only of its kind in the Deccan Region. The ruins still have a certain beauty that attracts the tourists from all over the country. Another attraction here is the hanging cornice to the cave that is based partly on towers. There is also an adjoining cave where the idols of Lord Ganesha and Lord Vinayaka are in a good condition comparatively though the cave is in ruins completely. The other attractive statue here is of the Nataraja. Apart from the Ardhanareeshwara fresco, you will also find faint remnants of artifacts of that ancient era. Mogalarajapuram Caves, situated near Vijayawada is well-known for the three cave temples and is said to be as old as 5th century AD. One of the three cave temples carries an impressive carving of Ardhanariswara which is known as one of its kind in south India. This cave temple has carved deities of Lord Vinayaka and Lord Shiva in Nataraja form and hence, is one of the major Vijayawada attractions. Gunadala Matha Shrine

The Gunadala Matha Shrine is popularly known as St. Marys Gunadala Matha Shrine is constructed on a hill in the Gunadala area of Vijayawada in Krishna-District of Andhra Pradesh. Mother Mary is said to have appeared on this hill as on 11th Feb.1858. Every year an annual feast is observed to celebrate this event with much fan fare. An Iron Cross is erected on the top of the hill. Holy relics and a collection devotees. Gunadala Matha Shrine, which is popularly known as Mary Matha Shrine is constructed in Krishna district near Vijayawada. Often known as St. Mary Church, this sacred site bears an iron cross, which is erected atop the hill. Every year an Annual Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated at this site. Tourists can also visit a museum inside the church, which holds a collection of holy relics of ancient period. The Gunadala Matha Shrine is also known as The Mary Matha Shrine or more popularly known as the St. Marys Church. It is the most popular pilgrimage for the Christians in Andhra Pradesh. This church located in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh is beautiful and perched on the top of a hill. There are lots of tourists visiting this place to seek the blessings of Mother Mary. There is also a huge statue of the Lord crucified on a cross. The unique feature of this church is the huge cross fixed on the peak of the hill to signify the situation of the church. Legend says that Mother Mary was seen here in the year 1858 by the then priest here. She was the one who founded this shrine and since then every year the Matha Festival is celebrated here with huge pomp along with the Mary Matha Fest that goes on for 10 days. Rajiv Gandhi Park

The Rajiv Gandhi Park in Vijayawada is a well maintained park set up by the Andhra Government. It is nice place to spend an evening with your family and loved ones. The park is special because it is very popular especially among children. It has a small zoo with quite a few cute animals. It also has a park with replicas of ancient animals and especially dinosaurs. There is a beautiful fountain inside and musical fountain shows are also organized in the evenings. Another attraction that makes the park popular is the horticulture collection. The diverse range of fauna here looks just amazing. The secret behind the good growth of plants is the fertile soil of the Krishna River banks. The park is named after our first Prime Minister Sri Jawaharlal Nehru to honor his role and contribution in the development of our country and for the welfare of its people. Rajiv Gandhi Park, located at the entrance of Vijayawada is one of the most prominent attractions of Vijayawada. The park is built and maintained by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. This park features musical fountains that operate every day from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm, except on Mondays. The park also has manicured lawns and walking trails along with a mini zoo. Within the park, there is an educative park, which has replicas of dinosaurs and other pre-historic animals.
