The Mini Zoo at Haddo, Port Blair was once famous for its crocodile breeding programs. True to its name, this small zoo dotted with stately rosewood, padauk and maple trees now houses monkeys, a salt water crocodile, Malayan box turtle and birds like the Andaman dark serpent eagle, white bellied sea eagle, parrots and the near threatened Nicobar pigeon. After the opening of the Chidiyatapu Biological Park, most of the animals, except these, have been moved there. On request, they also show documentaries in the adjoining auditorium. A visit to the Mini Zoo need not be on the top of the list. Some of the rarest species like Nicobar pigeon, the Andaman pig and the Andaman gecko can be seen in the Mini Zoo which is situated at Haddo, off the Delanipur-Chattam Road in Port Blair. There are around 200 species of birds and animals in the mini zoo. The zoo is within the premises of the Forest Museum and can be visited in the same trip as the Forest Museum. There is a crocodile farm inside the zoo which is a breeding place for crocodiles which are later released into the coastal mangrove swamps. The popularity of the Mini Zoo is attributed to the crocodile farming and breeding programs. These animals can be later seen in the water surrounding the green forests. Some of the trees that are found are the padauk, rosewood, marble wood, etc. The other place to visit in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the mini-zoo. This is the place which is fully covered with natural beauty. This is actually an attraction for children of these islands. This is the opportunity to watch the natures closely. The Mini Zoo fills up the gap and satisfies the wants of the local people, particularly the children. Mini Zoo is located in Port Blair and is about 2.5 kms, from Port Blair on the Chatham route. The Samudrika museum presents a perfect blend of the old and the new, the present and the past. The museum has been thoughtfully divided into five different rooms, each of them showcasing a different facet of the Andaman Islands. A massive blue whale, in its skeletal form of course, greets you as you enter the museum. Did you know that Andaman apparently has been named after Lord Hanuman or Handuman as they refer to him here? From its name to how it came to be formed, the first room deals with the geographical history of the islands. The second and third rooms will be quite a delight for the young and the old alike. An aquarium in the second room is teeming with fishes of all shapes and sizes, from a parrot fish to the rare and venomous species of stone fish. The third room on the other hand exhibits corals, which the islands are quite famous for. A fourth room houses an extensive display of shells. Thus giving one a complete sense of the marine life of the Andamans. As important as the marine life is to the Andamans, one canít leave the museum without visiting the fifth room. Here one will find information about the tribal life in the islands along with a display of interesting specimens of snakes and butterflies. You should visit the curio shop in case you want to take back a few souvenirs of your trip here. Advice: Donít use flash during photography. It disturbs the marine animals. Samudrika is the naval marine museum that brings together all the prominent aspects of Andaman Islands such as geography, history, anthropology and exquisite marine life. The museum is equipped with five meticulously divided rooms highlighting different facets of Andaman. At the entryway of the museum, a massive skeleton of blue whale greets the tourists.
