Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom bird sanctuary, spread across 14 acres, has an interesting variety of birdlife. If you are a bird enthusiast, visit the sanctuary between June and August, the breeding season of resident wetland birds such as Indian Darter, Little cormorant, different species of egrets and herons, white ibis, several species of kingfishers, etc. Between the months of November and May, the bushes and woods of the sanctuary play host to some rare migratory birds. The Vembanad lake body attracts waterfowl like pin tailed duck, garganey teal, spot billed duck, birds of prey like osprey, marsh harrier, steppe eagle, etc Bird lovers can also take a boat trip to the nearby Kaipuzha Muttu, Pathiramanal, Narakathara, Thollayiram Kayal and Poothapandi Kayal to watch local birdlife and migrants which could easily be more than a hundred species. Waterscapes, the backwater resort of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation situated near the sanctuary, has independent cottages built on stilts. an enchanting island on the lake, can be accessed by boat from here. This 10 acre island on the backwaters is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. According to mythology a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening ablutions and the water madeway for the land to rise from below. The island can be accessed only by boat. Aruvikuzhi Waterfalls

Aruvikkuzhi is a beautiful picnic spot and an ideal shooting location for movies located in Kottayam. Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls, falling in five steps, is a real feast for the eyes. Here streams make their way through the landscape and the water roars as it cascades down the mountains from a height of 100 ft. It is an ideal place for trekking and is located in the midst of rubber plantations. St. Mary Church is situated at the top of the waterfalls. The rubber plantation centre at Pallickathod, is just 1 km from this spot. A mud path from Kumarakom leads to Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls. At the end of this 2 km trail is the waterfall, which is a popular sightseeing spot. Kumarakom, a village in South Kerala, is known even outside the bounds of India for ambient backwaters and authentic house boats. Visiting Aruvikkuzhi, the local falls, is an added plus for people who reach here for backwater rides. Small yet pretty, the waterfall is inviting enough for a short break of a couple of hours or even a half day picnic. The green backdrop of rubber plantations around is complemented by the sparkle of meandering streams. Birds fly over nearby plantations as well as wetlands. If you are a bird lover, there is great news for you. Kumarakom is a bird haven, thanks to backwaters, wetlands and green canopies. Visit to the nearby Kumarakom bird sanctuary goes well with the waterfall trip. At Aruvikkuzhi, water cascades down about 100 ft from a rocky terrain.
